An Early 18th Century Ebonized Pear Wood and Pewter Inlaid Casket. The tablet topped hinged cover, with a central panel inlaid with a mask of Zeus, from which flow scrolling leaves and foliage, the panel within a raised mould border, surrounded by a further concave and ripple moulded edge, before the rounded and stepped outer edge. The cover opening to an interior of two divisions. The body of the casket with an arrangement of shallow and deeper drawers, each drawer with a returning ripple mould edge, surrounding centres of Phoenix flanking flaming torches, classical masks, from which spread Phoenix, and the lower drawers with spreading leaves and flowers. The cask raised up on a ogee reeded frieze, finished with an ogee lower moulding. The inlaid pewter decoration likewise to the side panels, with classical masks supporting vases of flowers surrounded by scrolling flowers and foliage within reeded ripple mouldings, and to the rear likewise, with panels of Phoenix facing spreading leaves. Date circa 1700. Height 12 inches, 31cm. Width 16 inches, 41cm. Depth 10 1/2 inches, 27cm.
