An Early 19th Century Side or Writing Table. The table with a raised frieze edge, surrounding walnut banding, enclosed within strung and crossbanded borders, finished with turret quarters, a parquetry centre in kingwood and contrasting tulip wood pattern of 'tumbling cubes'. The frieze likewise with the 'tumbling cubes' decoration, between break front legs, inlaid with petal heads in boxwood and burr yew, held within a facing, supported by inlaid guttae, the tulip wood faced legs, enclosing kingwood cross banding, as the legs taper to brass sabots. The top with a metamorphic action, so that the main top slides backward to expose the frieze drawer, which likewise slides forward, thus doubling the available surface. The frieze drawer with a Moroccan leather and gilt tooled edge writing surface, this sliding back to reveal a compartment divided interior. The drawer complete with lock, key and foliage cast escutcheon. Date circa 1800. Height 28 3/4 inches, 73cm. Width 21 inches, 53cm. Depth 15 3/4 inches, 40cm.
