A very good 19th Century papier mache tray by the renowned makers, Ryton and Walton of Wolverhampton. A broad flat rim with tapering edges surrounds a rectangular central panel. The whole decorated with parrots and butterflies perched and flying amongst twigs, leaves and flowers, the edges with blue cornflowers. The whole against a green background. The rear marked "Ryton and Walton, Wolverhampton."
Footnote: Benjamin Walton and Co. was formed in 1840 with William Ryton and located in Old Hall, Wolverhampton which housed a long line of japanners from 1767 to 1882. The artists employed by Walton introduced a new decorative style to church interiors and stately homes which became known as the "Wolverhampton Style."
