An Early 19th Century Decorated Spa Box. With a rectangular hinged top, the top painted with a lakeside scene, as a couple meet and a fisherman sits on the bank, and a woman checks her nets, all against a romantic background of a ruined castle above sailing ships. The scene within classical Roman banding, and line decoration repeated to all sides of the box. The box opening to eight lidded boxes, likewise with line banding, centred by people walking in landscapes, the eight boxes surrounding a central tray. Spa Boxes were made for visitors to the spa towns of Europe in the 19th Century. Date circa 1820. Height 2 1/4 inches, 6cm. Width 11 1/2 inches, 29cm. Depth 8 3/4 inches, 22cm.Ref: 23919
