An Early 19th Century Bronze Sun Dial by Adie & Son, Edinburgh. The circular plate with a rope twist outer edge, sweeping to scrolled and chased ends, surrounding the engraving 'ADIE AND SON, EDINBURGH'. The rope twisting enclosing an outer ring for minutes, a broad chapter ring for hours, in Roman Numerals, thence a leaf decorated ring, and then the points of the compass, with arrow and leaf decoration for the compass points. The whole centred but the open gnomon. Date c 1800. Height 6 1/2 inches, diameter 11 1/4 inches. Adie and son operated from 1775 - 1822, at 58 Princes Street, Edinburgh, supplying optical, mathematical, meteoroly and observatory items. John Adie was elected a fellow of The Royal Society of Edinburgh 1819.
