A Large 19th Century Alder Wood and Inlaid Stationery Box. The top of the box with ogee profile, inlaid with flower heads, within an ebony border, opening to two deep compartments. The slope front formed by a pair of locking doors, each inlaid with oriental planters and fanned swages, within borders of chequered lattice and spreading bows. The interior with a range of graduated letter and paper compartments, with a pen tray below. The lower frieze with along drawer inlaid with geometric and floral decoration. The sides with fielded panels inlaid with fruit trees. The rear with a compass rose within a flower quartered re-entrant border. The whole finished with an ogee foot rim. Complete with locks and keys. A very unusual and quirky thing! Height 15 1/4 inches, 39cm. Width 17 1/2 inches, 44cm. Depth 13 inches, 33cm. Date circa 1850.
